  in october of 2000, i faded away from the watchtower.

  like most people, i have family and friends who are jw's (including my wife and parents).

  fading is generally the best method for people in that situation.

  the main guy in the cong, they call them coordinators now or something, used to be called po right?....anyway, this guy kept reading from a different bible and seemed like he was trying to get others to do the same....."the living bible" ?

  could this have something to do with the rumors about phasing out the nwt?

  I don't think the society will abandon the NWT, they have invested a lot of it's prestige in " the best translation". Other rumours are telling that there will be a new edition of the NWT later this year.

  I find this fascinating, PA. The dissonance is really powerful. People who have read about the overlapping generations, that have heared speeches at assambleys on it, and have studied about it in WT-study articles are completley ignorant of it! This is why psychology can be very interesting.

  Yes, you are right Shirley. Most JW think something like: "I have to accept this new light about the overlapping generations, otherwise I lose my hope of eternal life, and I will be shunned by my friends and family." The cognitive dissonance is a mental prison.

  i was raised atheist and never believed in any religion.

  i've been studying the watchtower religion with a younger jw couple for some months now.. my main motivation was the fact i knew nothing about christianity, they knocked on my door and offered their "bible" study... so why not learn something, i thought.. .

  and yeah, this is one crazy cult.... .

  This is what is called "Cognitive dissonance". They fear losing their hope of eternal life when confronted with facts that not support their belief system, so they just ignore or dismiss facts.

  To reach a dissonant person you must make them feel safe and get behind their dissonance. Steven Hassan has written a lot about this, reaching the "genuine self" not the "cult self".

  for example, they pride themselves in what they don't believe such as immortal souls, the trinity, hellfire, etc.. some exjws still believe it is the "truth" and support the basics.. .

  Yes! I think it's true that the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD. At least the WTS seems to have someting right in their chronology.

  It is interesting with the overlapping generations. I cannot see how a thinking person could accept a teaching like that; it's so obvious that they changed the generation-teaching in some desperate attempt of damage-control. I wonder how many active JW's are waiting on "new light" regarding that generation dogma. These overlapping generations must be considered outright stupid by many active JW's.
